One mover, two movers, three movers...four?

One mover, two movers, three movers...four?
With most reputable moving companies it depends entirely on the size of your move.  A smaller move tends to warrant two movers, a medium size move at least three movers with the largest move being at least four movers.

When you call in to schedule an appointment for a moving estimate or obtain a moving quote, your agent will begin by gathering  information about your move.  A list of things they will ask is indicated below:

  • How many bedrooms?
  • What's the square-footage of your home?
  • Do you have any large or fragile items?
  • Is your home one story, two or more?
  • Will you need packing done?
The answers to these questions will help the mover gauge your move size and then devise a move plan that addresses your moving need.  The least amount of movers sent will be two.  Two movers generally handle one and two bedroom apartments.  For larger two bedroom apartments, condos and three bedroom homes, three movers are generally assigned.  And lastly for larger three bedroom homes and more you should receive at least four movers and possibly five depending on home size.

I've heard all sorts of horror stories about the amount of movers received for a given move.  When you are discussing your move with the agent make sure you find out the number of men and their hourly moving rate.  The amount of movers affect the pace of the move.  If the moving crew is hindered because a lack of support it will cost you in the end. Also ask if there are any minimums associated with your move.  These questions shed light on your anticipated costs.

The size of your moving crew is not picked out of a lottery, but your experienced mover will package the right amount of movers and tools to deliver a move for you that is second to no other moving company.

Why Hiring a Professional Moving Company Can Save You Money

The cost of moving can be financially burdensome to a family or a company, and the final cost, after all of the bills have been tallied, often can be far more than what was initially budgeted for. There are the costs associated with a new office, warehouse, home or apartment—including but  not limited to such fees as security deposits, down-payments, first months rent, brokers fees, etc.  There are bills originating from internet and telephone providers, interior designers and general contractors, painters and security system installers.  The list of bills during a moving period can seem endless and is unique to each individual and company.  As a result, the first impulse may be to try to save money on the move itself, as the moving process can appear at first glance manageable, and the notion of self-moving can initially appear to offer much needed cost savings.  Although there are certainly instances where self-moving can work, for the mos...

Moving 101: The Self-Move vs Hiring A Professional Moving Company

At its simplest, a self-move involves renting a truck, packing your belongings yourself, and loading and unloading on your own. The only time limitations are your own personal availability and the bodies needed to load everything. Rental truck companies (U-Haul, Ryder, Penske, Budget, etc.) are ubiquitous, so you can work at your own pace. However, self-moves demand careful consideration. First, does it make economic sense? While distance often dictates the answer to this question, it can be easy to overlook the many costs involved: fuel, mileage fees, tolls, meals, lodging, not to mention the cost of renting a truck spacious enough to contain your belongings (a good rule of thumb: a 10′ truck for 1 to 2 furnished rooms, a 14-15′ truck for 2 to 3 rooms, 18′ to 20′ truck for 3 to 4 rooms, and a 22′ to 24′ truck for 5 to 6 rooms ). In Louisville, Kentucky for example, a 24’ box truck at Ryder Bluegrass Park costs $103.95 per day plus .36 cents per mile sans the physical damag...

Where to donate your used goods

You never realize how much stuff you have until you’re packing for a move. And you uncover clothes you haven’t worn in months (some may even still have tags on them), toys your kids haven’t played with or old grab-bag gifts that you just never found a place for. We usually just stuff those in the boxes along with everything else and vow to make space for them in our new home. But this time around, why not lighten your moving load? Instead of sending your no-longer-needed things off to the dumpster or keeping them around, donate them. Luckily, we live in a great city that has tons of donation centers, resale shops and non-profits that would love to take those things off your hands. Here are a few ideas of where you can donate your gently used things.     Whether you’re downsizing, up sizing or just rethinking the feng shui in your new home, consider donating your furniture instead of trashing it. Resale shops are great and there’s always the free stuff section ...

How To Get Your House Ready For A Move In Five Easy Steps

Life can be stressful when you are trying to sell your home.  The last thing you want to think about is how your home looks to prospective buyers.  But the truth of the matter is, selling your home is just as much presentation as it is market value.  If a prospective buyer gets a "sense" that this is a good home to buy, most of your work is done. So how do you help someone make a decision to buy a house?  You remove all obstacles.  What I mean is you must remove anything that would stick in the back of their mind as a red flag. Let's walk down a short list of easy things you can do help a prospective buyer feel at home: Give your house the cleaning of a lifetime.  Do not be afraid to get down and get dirty.  The cleaner you house is, the more welcome people will feel.  And the more welcome they feel, the more of a pleasant experience it will be for them. Remove all unnecessary furniture.  The look you are going for is "furni...

But my piano was only $50!

Moving Piano's in Louisville, Kentucky Since 1999 - aLocalVan We move pianos . We charge a pretty reasonable fee to do so. Yet the first words I hear  50% of the time is “but I only paid…” or “but I got it for free..” The reality is someone gave or sold you a 400 – 900 pound piece of furniture. Movers move heavy things, some with value and some without value. The value has little to do with the moving cost, the weight does. If pianos were made of wicker and feathers, you would not be calling a piano mover . So… if you are looking to buy a piano or if someone is blessing you with a free piano, consider what will affect your moving cost. Is it a spinet or grand? (Grands are more expensive) Is is on ground level or are there stairs? (Gravity is your enemy and affects the price) Is it going to moved a short distance or far? Can we move any day or does it need to be on Saturday at 430 PM? (exact times cost more) Finally, is it worth buying the piano? Cost to ...

Packing The Bedroom

OK, packing the bedroom can be a daunting task.  Wading through all the clothes, knick-knacks, books, kid's toys, and accumulated "stuff" can make the most sturdy heart faint.  Since we have some experience moving people in Louisville and beyond, we have developed a precision plan to tackle the mountain and make a manageable project.  Follow these easy steps and getting your bedrooms ready will be a breeze: Create three piles: Create space for three pile: Keep, Throw, and Donate.  Belongings, like our waistline, tend to grow with time.  It takes discipline to keep both in line.  So making the hard decision up front is tough, but it will save hours during the move.  Decide what needs to get tossed, donated to Good Will, and what is important enough to make it to your new place.  Use the one year rule - "If you haven't used it in a year, toss it." Pack a First Night Suitcase: The first night in  your home will be chaotic.  ...

Retirement and Relocation

While economic conditions may have affected or delayed the retirement plans of some, there is still a great number of baby boomers reaching retirement age. According to a Dell Web survey of baby boomers, 55% of them plan to move when they retire. If you own a home it is likely your most valuable asset. Although there may be many emotional ties to your current home, you should consider if its the right place for you in retirement. There are many good reasons to consider downsizing or relocating for retirement: Retiring with debit is not optimal; perhaps you can downsize and eliminate the need for a mortgage completely. Even if you don’t have enough equity to buy a smaller home outright, reducing the size of your mortgage payment will likely improve your financial security in retirement. Your housing needs during retirement will most likely be different than your current needs and you may want to find a home and community that better suits your retirement needs. In addi...
